Can you contribute to a team with no manager?

I want to find out:

can a guy actually make a living doing some software development on his own?
can this guy be considered part of a workgroup, team or team of solo workers?
If the answer is yes, will he need to have a “manager”?

It isn’t about whether this is a good idea or a bad idea, it is about how it actually works.

A:

It’s a very difficult question to answer because there are so many variables involved, but let me make a few basic assumptions and work backwards:

He’s managed to get a job doing it.
In this world we inhabit, the money he makes is not enough to support a family, or himself comfortably.
There’s some hidden motive why he wants to do this.

If the answer is yes, he’ll have enough to get by, but if your definition of “enough to get by” is just “not starving”, there will be far too many people who cannot support their families doing work of value.
This of course assumes that he’s still capable of doing work of value. It’s unlikely he’ll continue, because there’s very few industries which are not geared toward having lots of inexpensive labor available.
I’ve described the “solution” in my answer to a similar question; that response’s good for most other answers as well.

A:

You can hire a contractor, but I think you’ll have a hard time calling them a “team” with no manager (though having no manager would be a bit unusual).
That said, you really can find a whole range of jobs that are “virtual” in the sense that you and/or the system can work independently of each other. The best example I can think of is in video game companies, because they have an established model of “you make the game, then we take it apart, plug in the hardware, load it, and then run the finished product.” This often involves very little interaction between different team members, even if they work in different time zones.

In this game, you play as Quasimodo, custodian of the Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris. When a new villain named Halfenpounder takes control of Esmeralda, Quasimodo must race through a variety of platform-based environments, jumping from platform to platform, avoiding enemies, obstacles, and all manner of things you might meet on your search for Esmeralda.
Key Features:

Fruit-based eating: Quasimodo must eat and drink to keep his strength up. When he runs out of both, he drops to the ground and you lose a life. But don’t worry, when you collect fruit you can turn that into more!
A richly-detailed world: From the green moss of the Crypt to the bright cathedral windows, to the spires of the city, this rich environment is beautifully-detailed with strange wooden planks that will kill you just as surely as Halfenpounder’s spiked spikes.
Difficulty: The game’s difficulty has been scaled up, to account for its increased length. So expect a bit more challenge and more fruit to be consumed!
Smooth gameplay: The game’s physics-based gameplay gives Quasimodo a unique, organic look. It’s more “realistic” than an ordinary “stickman” game.
