the game is a mostly linear affair. you can only go in one direction at a time, but you can move in diagonal lines. i recommend playing this game on a big screen (for instance, while watching a film) because it looks so much more beautiful on that medium than on the ipad. your hunting party is a diverse bunch and includes a fox, a bear, a crocodile, a zebra, an elk, a hippo, a lion, a lynx and a jaguar. you can use all of the weapons to kill them, including the rifle, a bow, a crossbow, a shotgun, a machine gun, a grenade launcher, a sniper rifle, a rocket launcher, and a flamethrower. there’s also a grappling hook.
instead, it’s the split-screen co-op that’s really the star of the show, and it’s a blast. one of the big differences between this and the recent call of duty: black ops 2 is that cabela’s dangerous hunts doesn’t take place in a sandbox. you’re sent into a specific set of locations, and cabela and his posse of hunters are sent on a mission to retrieve a certain item that’s scattered in the world.
it’s more than a simple fetch quest, and if you’re in the mood for a straight shooter, you may find that cabela’s dangerous hunts 2013 isn’t it. there’s an interesting variety of tasks to perform, and the game’s story is just as interesting and just as morally gray as anything else in the game. you’ll be shooting lots of animals, and we like that, but it feels like you’re playing a different game from a different developer, rather than the single developer that made the original.
the real-life cabela’s dangerous hunts has been around since 1997, but the 2013 edition is a much-needed update. even though the game’s graphics may be dated, its gameplay is solid and it manages to retain the essence of the original while still injecting a modern attitude.
