Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the sequel to the 2007 blockbuster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, a first person shooter developed by Infinity Ward. Set in 2010, the game takes place a year after the ending of Modern Warfare. A cyber-terrorist group known as “OBL” (Outbreak of the Blacklist), lead by Ali Hassan Salameh, has hijacked a plane with the intent to attack American soldiers on board and crash it into the White House.
The game takes place in two time periods: the original campaign, and a survival mode. The first part of the campaign takes place over the course of one year, taking place primarily in the war-torn city of Moscow, and the second part takes place just prior to and on the very day of the catastrophe.
The game introduces a completely new map, “Day 1,” which takes place at the start of the plot. Day 1 begins with a mid-air crash of an airliner, the same that was hijacked in the game. The player is given a phone call on a civilian airplane, given the option of aborting the mission, and ordered to help the terrorists. The player then engages in a firefight in an underground labyrinth, as well as sneaking through the terminal building and fleeing the airport. If the player aborts the mission, the mission ends, but the player will still be given the weapon and rank upgrades from the mission. There are also some medals earned for this mission.
The remaining missions and gameplay in the campaign will be subject to the player’s play-style. Although the game offers multiple play-styles, the “kill-faster” style that featured in Modern Warfare is not included in the game.
The game introduces the “Support” system, where the player will be allowed to control up to five more players (via local computer), the “Saviours”, and the new Drones, along with a new weapons system called “Consolidator”. The Support system allows the player to provide assistance to the player’s team (Saviours), directly by controlling them. Other than that, the player is also able to use the Drones to aid in the player’s mission, as well as utilize the Consolitator to destroy nearby enemies.
After completing the first mission, players will be given the opportunity to view a video montage of the player’s gameplay in the campaign and the ability to save the in-game movies to the hard drive. Players will also be able
