i wanted the squad management to be easier, while simultaneously making it a more tactical affair. i wanted to remove the bugs and allow the game to run faster. i wanted to create a campaign mode with a storyline. i wanted the kind of natural evolution of the club that we felt football manager 2005 had lacked.

i also wanted something to replace the football games fc/afc/europe competition. championship manager had always been at a distinct disadvantage, by not being the first, just because it was the more difficult challenge.

when it came to the gameplay, i wanted the squad management to be fully implemented, with a basic reporting system, changing tactics, monitoring the training process, all the usual stuff. with that done, i could concentrate on everything else.

i ended up creating the most advanced and professional training process in the history of the championship manager franchise. it was of course broken into three phases, though the later two were really a general set of guidelines, rather than individual drills.

so the development team left, championship manager changed management and finally we were allowed to breathe again. and the results are fantastic. not only have the development team listened and built upon every feedback point given to them, but for the first time it has been possible to show off a new championship manager title with no hype, no pressure from fans and the media and no expectations.

the first release is more a proof of concept than an absolutely polished release. however, the feedback we have been getting has been positive, and with more releases ahead of us we know we have something worth looking into.

the green card position is denoted by the number below the players name, with the numbers from highest to lowest used first. the player will be in the position on the third of the name which is equal to the green card. for example, if the card is 9, the player will be listed as 9th, 8th etc..
green cards are made available by training your players and matches are won by the player with the highest possible goal difference when the match ends. so the player with the lowest goal difference (in front of the opposing goalkeeper) will always win the match.
players in this game are quite easy to control, often becoming a little too competent. it is essential that you train enough to keep your players performing at their highest level though. a high enough division will mean a high enough average level to maintain a good level of performance. if you don’t put enough effort into training though, your players will become even better than you are capable of.
so eventually, championship manager made the decision to shut down its development team, and concentrate instead on releasing football manager 2005, and bringing championship manager to the next generation via championship manager online.
although the franchise was in danger of being abandoned like a dog, i spent over two years trying to make championship manager the best game it could be. i also wanted it to be the best game of it’s type, without detracting from the main game experience and showcasing football manager 2005 as the only game, rather than football manager 2003. so the long development years were a never ending cycle of “what if”.
