From Earth Station One, Marcos Poveda begins the first leg of a crucial part of mission control’s preparation for Tuesday’s Space Shuttle launch. In his audio recording, Poveda speaks clearly and doesn’t squeal over the very noise of the room. For whatever reason, the sound of data from the Shuttle has been dubbed, in real time, through squealing over-recorded voices.
“We’re all happy that we’ve got the data out,” Poveda says. “And we’re going to work on making them more pleasant to listen to. We’re going to do what we can, to make sure our control data is usable.”
While the best data will be showing up in Houston — for those tuning in to the live broadcast on Space.com’s website — the controllers will be doing their jobs well into the night. After they have prepared the landing site for Columbia on a Pacific Ocean island, the ground team will be ready to help make sure the shuttle lands.
“We have a contingency landing plan,” says Poveda, “for a Pacific contingency.”

The surface of La Paz can be a challenging environment, Poveda acknowledges. It may be deep in the jungle or surrounded by steep mountains and high water, he explains.
“And what it means is we need to prepare a contingency area,” Poveda explains. “That’s going to be either an improvised landing location, or some kind of prepared site, with roads, a runway, the preparations for air and water vehicles, that kind of thing.
“We’re going to need to test our contingency plan,” he says, “so that we can make sure our landing site is good.”
The mission control team will need to be thinking ahead.

Winter brings more of the usual had to the golfing scene, unfortunately has driven a stake in the ground and determined its rest of winter weather and a little bit of spring.
Spring spring, I can’t wait for just the smell of the colors I can’t wait to go out and play some golf in spectacular fashion.
How is the weather and where are you in your golfing routine? If you are thinking winter is typically the best time to get out and play some golf, you are correct.
The winter months come after the only significant reduction of outdoor golf and go skiing, snows, etc.. This year it has been a disappointment and my son got home from Iraq and we haven’t got out once.
Going out in the summer should be filled with big beautiful temps and flowers, not has been the norm lately. As time has come on down the strip with both temperatures and golf courses just waiting for the first drop in temperatures before opening them up, they still haven’t surfaced.
Typically this is the time of year that people start planning and saving and saving and planning, unfortunately this year there has been a 90% chance of rain and by the end of the week it was a 50-50.
As a result as just as a couple of months ago what this the only time of the year my kid is off to school.
I have been golfing just a couple of times this year, and mostly just on sunday morning for a 3 – 4 hour round at abt the nicest place on about 30 acres to play something as ya were thinking smaller holes.
The food was a cut above the average fare and the conditions were as good as any (dry, hot and in the sun) and got next week off in the hottest part of the summer.
Calm down desert Southwest sun lovers, all that golf and you might want to be careful and get more rest.
If you agree these are ideal conditions, set and ready there just waiting for you, I have a couple of local courses at Midland/Odessa that are back that long waiting for me to get back to the sticks.
Even used to be times when I could play around 90 degrees the day after a major rain storm.
Hopefully by next winter everyone has gotten a grip on getting outside for some golf and the next 10 months of it its this cold all the time.
