From the opening mission to the quest for access to secret missions, there are no shortcomings in the campaign. Air Combat Evolution II forges ahead of its time by providing players with quick and easy access to the game’s hidden level, as well as to a wide variety of hidden missions and access to secret missions.
Set in the Pacific Theater of the Second World War, the gameplay represents the Japanese aircraft carriers as the titular Blazing Angels. It is a multiplayer game, featuring six player versus player modes (Team vs Team, Free for All, Deathmatch), four player versus AI (Local, Network, Global, Offline) and a campaign mode.
Unlike its predecessor, Blazing Angels: Battle of the Skies, the sequel is less of a straight shooter and more of a story-driven series of missions, where each mission has at least one extra condition that needs to be met before successfully completing the final mission. Some of these include kills in certain areas, kills with specific weapons, air-to-air kills, and others. This ranges from different aircraft types like fighters and attack aircraft, to different eras of the war like the Second World War, to aircraft with different capabilities and weapons. You’ll complete one mission before returning to the previous mission (or going back to a mission’s previous mission), where you will pick up different equipment and even more powerful vehicles. You must continuously upgrade your aircraft and weapons to stay ahead of the enemy planes and complete your assignments.
Despite having two volumes (each has three game modes) only one can be played at a time and the games can take up to 5-10 hours to complete. The major game modes are: Mission Selection, which allows you to choose different missions or special aircraft missions like Japanese aircrafts, Russian aircrafts, Russian forest missions, special weapon missions, different eras of the war, victories against specific air-groups, and airplanes with stats. Challenge mode is the progression of gameplay with missions against the same enemy, each time with a new enemy plane.
