Previously we have reported the possibility of using NMR of deuterated solvents to study the effects of temperature on the process of photosynthesis. This study was aimed at the construction of new methodology which would allow the investigation of fast photobiological reactions, such as those occurring in photosynthesis. As an appropriate substrate for the study of this process we used the O2–H2O–sulphite system. It was chosen because it is of biological interest, its absorbance spectrum does not overlap with the strong absorption band of the deuterated solvent, and, on the other hand, its concentration can be sufficiently large for the NMR investigations of fast processes. To avoid sample overheating and to protect the sample from the external radiation our approach consists in using a Cryogenic cooled probe. On this basis we have studied the temperature effects on the deuterium exchange between deuterated water and sulphite (a model of the O2–H2O–sulphite system). The results indicate that the temperature effects in this case are substantially different from those in the case of water exchange in the O2–H2O–sulphite system. The results obtained show that the use of conventional end-labeled techniques for the evaluation of molecular dynamics in the O2–H2O–sulphite system is not adequate.On the go and no time to finish that story right now?
