Monks are the weakest class in Diablo 2, but they are certainly not the least powerful. They are basic in their specialization, focusing on melee combat by using shield and bat. They are also able to cast the berserk spell, which allows them to go berserk in place of melee attacks, as well as casting the fire spell to burn bridges and lay down traps. The monks have the advantage of being able to use their own souls to cast fire, glass, and even the lightning spell. At the end of their first level of training, they also learn a very useful variety of traps, including acid, ice, poison, and a petrifying trap. Sadly, no one does the same in Diablo.
The number of Necromancer supporters in Diablo 2 varies based on who you ask. Some feel their class is too weak, but that simply ignores the fact that they can produce all sorts of crazy toys to play with. For example, with right-click and the right amount of gold, a Necromancer can transform yourself into a skeleton, who can then walk over his/her fallen brethren and possess them, granting him/her the ability to absorb their soul, allowing him/her to transform into a monster of equal power. You can also reach levels of 76 to become a vampire. Vampires are considered weak, but they have the advantage of being able to absorb souls from other monsters to strengthen their bodies. They do, however, drain their victims of energy. At lower levels they are sometimes able to heal themselves so long as they stay in the sunlight. Once they reach the appropriate level, they can transform themselves into bats. The ability to take control of bats is not a great one; you are allowed to use them as lackeys, but they are not very effective. They do not count towards experience, though, as their large size prevents them from moving around freely.
The Runecaster is an expert at lore in Diablo 2. The Monk and the Thief are equally viable candidates, but if you’re feeling particularly malicious, the Runecaster may be the perfect fit for you. The Runecaster is skilled with not just melee weapons, but also with and is considered a formidable mage. They must maintain a large inventory, but they make up for it with the versatility of the Runecaster and the added powers of their Runestones.
The Witch Doctor was added to Diablo 2 with the Lord of Destruction expansion. While the Druid is the best fighter in the game, the Witch Doctor is the only class that can cast healing spells that can be used during combat. Just beware that they can heal monsters too. And while they can use any weapon, their best weapon is their staff of the same name.
The mage is an all-round class, capable of using most of your class’ weapons. With their long-range abilities they can provide covering fire for their allies. Mages are capable of shredding enemies with their powerful spells (a la Diablo III) at a safe distance. Given their diversity in abilities, mages are a very viable secondary class. If you don’t fancy yourself as much of a melee hero, nor do you feel the need to keep up with the action, a mage is an excellent second class!
The warrior is one of the most powerful classes in Diablo 2. In fact, they are relatively hard to kill. Even if you are killed, you just get up and strike back. If you do get killed a lot, you might get an earring, but you will never be out of the game (except for maybe a few reincarnations). However, a warrior with a high Dexterity can also do quite well with some heroic tricks on their enemies.
