Layer: This image is composed of a single layer. Layers can be useful in achieving many effects and appearances. Photoshop allows a user to add, delete, duplicate, move, and edit any layer.
Layer Mask: Layers masks are images that are placed on top of any other layer for special effects. They can be used to cut out objects from a layer, change the overall color of an image, and mask specific parts of an image without affecting those areas.
Curves: This image has curves applied to it. Curves are useful for altering the tones and hue of an image. Curves do not affect the overall color of the image.
Elliptical Marquee: The elliptical marquee tool allows you to edit only selected areas within a layer.
Paint Bucket: This image has been created with the paint bucket tool. The paint bucket tool allows a user to fill a specified area with a single color.
Gradient: Gradients have the ability to modify the overall color of a selected area. For example, the top of the building in the image on the right has been changed to a color of pink.
Layer Styles: The layer styles allow you to apply effects and settings to a layer. It can be useful in modifying aspects of an image such as the type of shadow, bevel, drop shadow, or perspective that an image has.
Guides: Guides are useful in determining where objects on a layer are located in relation to other objects on the layer. They are straight vertical lines that can be helpful when placing objects in a layout.
