Rails 3: Base Routing Confusion
I am trying to learn a bit of Rails by creating a simple web service. I’ve learned a lot over the past day with a framework I hadn’t used in the past, but I have been stuck with a problem for several hours now.
I am attempting to link to a page on my website using a form that has no action. The Rails guide states that you can simply omit the action like so:
But this is what I’m getting:
Incorrect number of arguments. Expected: 1, got: 0
My route file is simple:
resources :people, :collection => {:search => :get}
My controller file has simple too:
def search
end
I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. If I add a method after my resources in my routes file, nothing happens. I know the action is getting hit because I see in Chrome’s developer tools that it is hitting the server, and in my logs I see the route I have set up in my routes file. My route seems to be correct.
If I add a method after my controller, I get a routing error when trying to access my url.
If someone can point me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate it!

It seems like your route isn’t setup properly. You are trying to hit a resource named people (singular) as a collection. That doesn’t really make sense. If you are wanting to just fetch all of the people resources on the system you can use a named route:
resources :people, :collection => {:search => :get}
If you are trying to create a resource (which is what a collection does in Rails) you can add a new route:
match ‘/search’, :to => ‘people#search’
