The score was written for the EWQLSO almost ten years ago, its timpani part made using four tunable mallets in two fairly thin diameters. The smaller pads are weighted like a chime, producing a subtle timbre which is ideal for creating sizzle cymbals, while the bigger pads are like a Cymbal E toplover, providing a louder, beefier sound. An added layer of depth is provided with an exotic wood floor resonance, while two microtuning rods modify the timbre of the smaller diameters.
The orchestrated sound of EWQLSO is complex and yet crystal clear, with a very broad palette of orchestral colors. There are easy-on-the-ear trumpets to play the high wind, with sharper and woodier sounds for the lower trombones and percussion, a mellower pipeful for lower-pitched horns, and a potent and full-bodied stand-alone tuba. EWQLSO also contains nearly two hours of orchestral score, which includes arrangements of classical, jazz and rock music.
Most sounds used in EWQLSO are ‘groove bites’, with only a few source sampled direct from the orchestral recording. Yet the high-quality timbres are still quite organic, even though electronic processes were used to enhance the orchestral scores and convert them into layers. Even the drums were sampled with an expanded timbral palette, not from an OrchestralDrums/ percussion sampler pack, but from orchestral recordings on tape (used with the highest quality recording techniques available). The kits are also quite different from the other three sampler kits; they provide real samples (albeit in the order mentioned on the release leaflet) with a carefully fashioned timbral envelope.
EWQLSO is now the name of a label, and as such it has lost none of its terrific round-ness. A real labour of love that did not grow stale over time and remains an exhilarating journey. A terrific library. I would now consider it a best value proposition. It is also great for film, games, TV, whatever.
Every instrument in EWQLSO is recorded with three different mic positions. This is a powerful tool for manipulating the sound of any instrument and section, from immediate, realistic hall mics to mics placed close to the performer.
EWQLSO contains audio recorded from around the world. From the USA, Canada and Mexico we have recorded at the Hollywood Bowl and Thalia Theatre for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Albert Hall and Proms Hall for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Proms Hall and the Royal Chappell for the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for the Amsterdam Symphony. We have also recorded at the BBC Radio 3 Live Room, Swansea Philharmonic Hall, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and University of Surrey.
EWQLSO is composed of individual instrument files and instrument sections, each containing recorded stereo samples and a MIDI file for multi-tracking purposes. Each instrument has a total of 18 unique variations and each section has its own unique variations.
