Around ten years ago [1], I was really into mouse & keyboard games, and at the time, Valve and Starbreeze were the first to introduce VR support to PC games. The stuff you could experience then was a very basic, mostly keyboard-only system, with (SPOILER ALERT) Allacazam not even supported by Steam’s VR feature.

Then came actual support by third parties, and I stumbled upon the Tomb Guard product being sold by Introversion Software. I was already a huge fan of Introversion’s games, having played their hugely influential game 0x10c and their obscure Second Sight. Tomb Guardian was their first fully VR-ready product though, having been fully-fledged VR at launch.

It was a really lovely experience, and really helped build the foundations for better VR support from third parties, although I remember testing it many times for a year or two, while nothing else even offered basic (fully-functional) support for HMDs.

In hindsight, 2016 seems like a really good time to document all of this whole mess of VR support headaches. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did when I wrote it, and I’d love to get your thoughts on this story.

Valve

The only real support Valve released was a Steam VR driver which supported the Vive, and the HTC Vive Tracker system which I wrote a separate article about, because it needed an entirely separate piece of software.

As far as I know, the Steam VR interface hasn’t changed in any meaningful way since launch. They do host quite a few Vive/Vive-Tracker-related dev works, however, but that’s about it.

There isn’t one.

When Valve launched SteamVR, they built an API layer to expose Steam’s Steamworks systems to VR-compatible software and third-party headsets. There is no public API for anyone to access – all serious drivers and tools supporting HTC VR devices link to that API and interface through it, and it’s only Valve’s BVV system that directly exposes themselves to developers. As far as I know, this is the only thing that Valve has changed as a result of developing the Vive since it launched at the end of 2014.
