Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is a very tongue-in-cheek superhero movie. It doesn’t really have much to say about the nature of the genre itself, or it’s ethical or ethical by design. This matters less to the live-action Super Friends movies than it does to the shows themselves, but if you really want to speak to the comics’ diversity than you’ve got to read them in the context of their cultural reception. Some of those comics were actually aimed at children, and they went out of their way to avoid the aspects of the character that would have made them unpopular with kids. Because those things usually involve the character’s moral ambiguity, or the resolution of issues the character wasn’t actually all that invested in. Superpowers rarely affect real-world issues in a lasting way.

The Teen Titans Go! to the Movies doesn’t feel specifically aimed at kids, but it does play with the idea that kids are going to be more likely to get a kick out of the specific superhero franchise they grew up with. It is more likely to be accessible to them, so their enjoyment of the film rests on that ground.

The Teen Titans Go! to the Movies does have a message in there: even if the idea of superhero movies is ultimately ridiculous, it’s necessary to have them at least once every decade or two. Those are the sort of comics that keep rebooting. But it doesn’t directly address that.

Teen Titans Go! to the Movies pulls off a similar joke by describing its own comic-book universe as grandiose and laudable. Considering it was basically a gag about how it’s extremely hard to make a superhero film, this is surprisingly admirably ambitious.

However, there is one rather important difference between Teen Titans Go! to the Movies and the Deadpool series, which is that Deadpool is a character that is usually clear-cutly drawn as a reactionary symbol of the conservative political and social backlash to the political and cultural changes of the twenty-first century. He stands in for a type of villainous capriciousness that many people fear and dislike. That fits nicely into the narrative of parodies, because thats the kind of villain the genre is known for pulling off pretty well.
The best part of Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is the way it encourages us to think about Robin’s character more critically. His awkwardness in the series is apparent, but that awkwardness of his is not purely immaturity. To be fair, in the context of the Teen Titans universe, Robin is essentially a hero with an ego. However, one of the key points in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is that Robin is, if not self-aware, at least aware enough to point out that he is. He points this out again and again, and he makes every effort possible to avoid becoming the lead villain.
However, it would be a mistake to assume that Robin reflects a purely innocent, pure version of youth. This, of course, is one of the central themes of Teen Titans Go! to the Movies: that is, the nature of adulthood and growing up. Robin is an awkward, independent, slightly callous, almost immature superhero, but he is also more than a little self-interested and he quite deliberately displays self-consciously rebellious cynicism. (It helps that the film makes use of the ‘trolly’ Robin. Teen Titans character designs have always had a certain roughness to them, but, in that design, Robin is almost deliberately ugly. It’s unlikely that the silent Robin would have looked that much worse, and such an ugly Robin would have been far more effective in the role.)
