After successfully committing the standard robberies, Hoffman and Garcia find themselves wishing for some glory. So they go around pretending to be heroes. Garcia is the hardworking local guy who provides the intel to find the wreck. Hoffman is the flamboyant charmer who rides to the rescue on his motorcycle and plays the electric guitar as he is causing a commotion. Sure, its a simple premise, but the performances are the real thing. Theres a scene where its revealed that Hoffman wasnt really even friends with the people he was saving, and its one of the most moving moments Ive ever seen in a movie. In a long and serious take, he cries. They throw the cameras into the cameras to catch the look on Garcia’s face. It doesnt work. But its a lot better than what you get from nearly everyone else. After finding the kids, Hoffman and Garcia go off to save the day, but not before a montage of maybe a dozen scenes from other movies showing this type of thing. Garcia is the hero. Of course, he kind of gets away with his behavior the most when he allows the journalists to take him around to meet his fans. It’s all a bit depressing.
The plot of Hero is as loose as its premise. Its been described as being about ” a classic hero-villain formula,” but that comes off as needlessly simple. The movie features a bounty hunter (Garcia) who kidnaps a man for $1 million in reward money. The man had been on his trail for 12 years and had chosen a number of aliases, including “Hero.” In fact, his long quest for justice has been to fight and defeat the person who killed his wife. In the course of the movie, the bounty hunter falls in love with the wife’s mom (Davis), takes the mother to court to obtain an injunction, kills the guy who hired him to find the husband, runs from his other pursuers, and eventually fights the husband in hand-to-hand combat. Ultimately, he lures the husband into his car and takes him back to his mom’s house and then leaves the baby in the car. The husband gets away (naturally). He gets away. He gets away. And so forth.
