I will be dedicating the first week of September to Steam Greenlight if anyone would like to pitch in by supporting the game with any of the above. We are really looking forward to hearing the community’s feedback!

It is with a mixed feeling that I am announcing the delay of ByteChess 1.0. This is due to the fact that the game is dependent on a new engine I am developing that I am hoping to release as a free update in the near future.

ByteChess 1.0 will be delayed until the new engine is available and I can therefore more thoroughly test everything that the new engine offers. The new engine is a very complicated undertaking and I am facing many unforeseen problems that I need to solve first. I ask for your understanding.

I am also very grateful for the feedback and support I have received already and I will try to continue to make ByteChess a quality game for all to enjoy. As a small indie studio you can imagine there is much more work that goes into the game development process compared to a big studio. I hope you understand my decision to push back the release of the game and that you will continue to support us in this decision.

Part 6. I am in first grade!

This is PART 6.

You may remember in the last post I mentioned that this was about to become a series, and now it is. I’ve decided to take my journey through Kindergarten and wrap it up with grades 1st through 3rd!

First Grade has been really great in many ways. I get to learn everything I need to know in my daily schedule. (teacher breaks, meal times, bus pickup times, etc.). I also get to learn something new everyday. Every day we learn something different. We read books, we can keep them in our secret library. We can even sing songs and practice for the upcoming Meeter’s test.

There is one thing I will have to remind myself about like a broken record at every school to see if I can get them to stop calling me that. And that is:

Teaching young children is different in any setting. It is a daily lesson in patience.

This is the stage when they are telling you lies for the umpteenth time and you have to be conscious and patient. They are getting older in so many senses, but they are also becoming more cooperative.

See, a large amount of what we do with our kids is teach them through deeds. We have to build them in the mind. They get to see us be patient with them, so they learn that patience.

This means things like this happen regularly, as annoying as it is to be reminded:

We have to be patient and consistent with them to show them that we are teaching them at their age level, not at our own. So, many times I have to remind myself to have patience. This means I don’t yell or get frustrated, but I have to be firm in how I feel. I have to dig deep within for that “strength” that I am missing, and teach myself to learn as fast as I can and to set aside my feelings for good.

Because you teach this way, they believe you. They trust you. You are willing to change your mind when necessary. They trust you, as you trust that you will help them to learn, not only today, but for the future. You teach something and you do it with such conviction that when they see you repeating yourself, they believe that you are really learning and teaching them.

The game is played on a 13×7 grid with each space being “Life”.
Every player begins the game with 20 Life and they are given 1 additional life for every enemy killed.
You must spend your life to attack enemies or cast spells, you may attack up to 8 enemies at the same time in 3 different ways.
Killing an enemy adds ‘Life’ to your inventory to restore life to the grid.
You lose your life when you hit 0.
Key board Controls
“L” key to move the player “X” key to attack “Y” key to cast spells
After setting up the controls you are now ready to start the game.
The game has no ending but there is a top of the leaderboard.
Please Note:
You can not die from being hit. You automatically revive when you reach one of the life bars.
If you try to move after attacking and doing a move like attack spell, you will lose all your life.
It is a better idea to wait until you have a full inventory of Health and Life to fight.
At any time you can press “Z” to pause the game.
