Daydream Blue Summer House on the Bay is a 1960 studio album by Miles Davis.It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1960. Along with its namesake, it was Davis’s first album to be produced by Teo Macero.
Composition and recording
The title was created by Miles Davis’ guitarist Red Garland after he appeared in the Havana Hilton in South Beach, Miami with other musicians of the era. The apartment that was acquired by the Miles Davis Group (Langston Hughes, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Percy Heath, Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Clarke) was a convertiion of a colonial mansion that had been built in 1731 by the Spanish aristocrat José Joaquín de Zapata who had become very wealthy in the recently ended Haitian Revolution. The conosciuto owner Paquito D’Rivera donated the place to the City of Miami Beach in 1945. The five musicians, known at the time as the Miles Davis Sextet, rehearsed in the two-story mansion starting at two o’clock in the morning, when the apartment was closed to everybody else. According to Clef, one of the musicians, “He [Davis] was a riddle then, a riddle with a face, and we worked for 20 hours a day.”
The album was recorded at the Bach Studios, in Ticonderoga, New York by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, and at Columbia Studios, in New York City by Teo Macero, who were labelmates of the group. It was produced by Teo Macero (sound engineer and pianist on the album) and John Hammond. It was released on Columbia Records. It was Davis’s first album to be produced by Teo Macero. Macero was encouraged to try his hand at producing the album by Ralph Gleason and Bill Justis, but he chose Teo Macero, because Davis was well known at the time. Macero formed a very confident relationship with Davis and the group. The sessions lasted from June 30 to August 31, 1960.
