BBC is continuing with a hugely ambitious plan to make all of its content available online for free to anyone with a UK internet connection.
For a long time, BBC websites have offered streamed content only – that is, programmes that are not on video, such as text news stories, showbiz gossip and sport analysis. However, in the past week, all of the BBC’s websites have stopped, saying that these services will now be part of the iPlayer, which was launched five years ago. iPlayer now offers audio and video on the internet, as well as playable video on TV and computers.
The iPlayer, a BBC brand name, is available for free in the UK, and by subscription in the rest of the world. Now, all the BBC’s websites, including news, sport and archive sites, will be linked to it.
“We’ve got the best journalism and programmes there are in the world and we need to share them in innovative ways to reach as many people as possible,” said BBC director general Mark Thompson in a statement.
“We have had an amazing journey where now we have more than 95 million people viewing our content across the BBC website and on digital platforms,” he added.
The BBC said that the iPlayer had been used by 16 million people in the past year, which it says was more than the population of Australia, and there are now more than 1.4 billion iPlayer requests per month.
There are no plans to offer ad-free services, but it does seem likely that the BBC will make some sort of payment to ensure that there are no further barriers to access.

“We are absolutely committed to streaming our journalism, art and sport content as widely as possible,” Mr Thompson said.
“We will of course have to strike a balance between the costs of delivering digital content for free, and our journalistic responsibilities and constraints. We will be discussing this with our senior colleagues at our next editorial meeting on Tuesday and we’ll publish a final decision in due course.”
The BBC said it was “absolutely committed” to streaming its content in the future, but gave no timeframe for when it might be expected.
However, some question the BBC’s commitment to this goal, which is expected to cost millions of pounds.
