In 1998, I was working on a database software project to help, organize, and track musical instrument projects. I decided I wanted the ability to have multiple internal audio tracks along with external audio tracks and a sequencing engine to sequence those tracks. My need for an instrument became apparent when I needed to do 3-dimensional instrument synthesis for a piece of music. I designed and built the SH-009 Monosynth to add internal audio tracks and external audio tracks and to sequence those tracks. The SH-009 comes with a built-in delay that is programmable in many ways to accommodate many different styles of music.
The instrument can be programmed in MIDI, many different ways, one of them being with a keyboard. MIDI controllers are also supported.
In this way the SH-009 Monosynth is very versatile. A MIDI sequencer can control the envelope of each of the internal audio tracks and the envelope of the external audio track.
The SH-009 Monosynth is based on a DSP with a couple of external audio inputs and a couple of internal audio outputs that can be patched to anything. The SH-009 Monosynth is also plugged into a patch bay.
With the patch bay, the SH-009 Monosynth can be used as a standard filter within any modular environment. The filter can use either internal tracks as an internal audio path or external audio as an external audio path. The filter has a lot of control over its operation which is accessible through an optional DSP processor.
The SH-009 Monosynth comes with an optional DSP processor that is preloaded with a variety of preset filters. By combining the SH-009 with external audio tracks and a sequencer, one can use the preloaded DSP filters to create some truly unique instruments.
The SH-009 Monosynth is available in either versions that include internal tracks as well as external audio. A version with internal tracks only is available. The internal tracks are MIDI tracks that can be used to control the internal audio with a keyboard.
The device includes a 9 pin mini-jack for external audio to be patched into the filter. This can be used with the internal audio tracks or the external audio track. An external audio track can also be patched into the external audio track of the filter, a problem commonly solved by using a separate mixer with external audio channels.

The postDawn SH-009 Monosynth is a digital monosynth built around a VSTi host environment (plug-in in current terminology). The effect is an abstract of the synth engine.
The postDawn SH-009 Monosynth is fully featured but has three, pre-built, preset DSP Stages. The three Stages are: modulation, chorus, and a delay line. The modulation stage provides a range of modulation with different characteristics, the chorus is a standard LFO with a range of effects. The delay stage is a parametric delay with multiple attenuation settings and the delay time is pre-set to whatever the user desires. The third stage is similar in concept to the modulation stage. It is a linear phase EQ but only the lower frequencies are affected by the EQ. The SH-009 Monosynth has been designed to emulate the classic semi-synthesis sounds of the 80’s.
The last of the pre-programmed effects is a stereo reverb effect. In terms of quality and performance, the reverb is superior to the unit found in most virtual synthesizer environments.
The postDawn SH-009 Monosynth can be driven by external audio sources such as MIDI, OSC, WAV, MP3, AAC, etc., and it is typically driven by a host of VSTi compatible DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) or standalone plug-in applications, such as Virtual Studio Technology (VST) and Audio Units (AU). The SH-009 Monosynth is a subtractive synthesizer that provides a wide range of timbres with additional sound shaping such as a chorus effect.
Aside from the pre-programmed effects, the postDawn SH-009 Monosynth provides an X and Y knobs to filter frequency and modulation range. An LFO with an integer counter can be used to sweep the modulation range. The modulation and delay range can be controlled by using the LFO modulation rate and delay time using the same modulation parameters.
The postDawn SH-009 Monosynth has been optimized for use with a virtual oscillator where the pitch (controllable via pitch modulation) is driven by the virtual oscillator. The postDawn SH-009 is a mini module based on their acclaimed Symphony SH-004 Active filter. But unlike the SH-004, it is expanded to handle an external audio signal as an insert and can also be used as a monosynth or have effects applied to it.
The SH-009 uses a new circuit design that takes advantage of a new topology. Previous versions used eight sections with six poles and six capacitors. This was designed with efficiency in mind since it only needed to provide a very low-pass filter. The new design uses only four sections and five capacitors, which provides a lot of flexibility to shape the filter.
There’s a volume control and feedback control which adds a potentiometer for a filter resonance, a top-side input that allows it to work as a monosynth or as an audio effect, an LFO-enabled envelope generator, and an LFO.
The SH-009 is sold as an instrument module, but it actually provides a host which is very similar to the SH-004. It doesn’t have the direct out (DDO) but I’ve found it to be a better midi option than the SH-004 because it is less noisy.
The SH-009 Monosynth
The primary purpose of the module is to be an insert in a modular system. But it is not limited to that; it can also be used as a monosynth or you can create effects by running the SH-009 through effects such as distortion or synthesis.
Because of its small size, it is ideal for bass-focused synths. If you want to use it as a monosynth, I would prefer to use a low-pass monosynth filter instead of sending the audio through the SH-009 first.
The SH-009 can be configured to work as a standard monosynth or as an effect module.
The SH-009’s max cutoff is 100Hz. While it sounds great down to 20Hz or so, the sound degrades at frequencies past 20Hz. If you need to filter a high frequency signal, the SH-004 has a low pass filter with a cutoff from 15-20Hz while the SH-009 is only up to 100Hz.
