Because I would not want to leave you without any option for El Capitan, I took a crack at trying to install it as well, finding it tricky and running into a few roadblocks and unforeseen problems as I went. (I have tried the El Capitan installer before this release, and it runs fine on Mavericks, even after all that time off.)
I found a download of El Capitan from Apple right after the Sierra release. Took it for a spin and it worked just fine and completed the installation. No problems there.
Next I downloaded the Adobe Creative Cloud for Sierra installer. The technical support pakcage that came with the installer would not let me upgrade to CS6, citing a problem with the install. (The technical support had CS6 installed already and could not get the installer to find it.) I then tried removing the pakcage support file. That worked. Then I tried starting the install from scratch. That worked. Finally I tried reinstalling the installer using the pakcage support file included. That didnt work, but the installer did work when started from scratch. By the end I was able to get the installer to work the way I wanted. And after that it was just like upgrading CS5.5 to CS6.
I just downloaded and installed Sierra 10.12.4 directly from Adobe website. I didnt update my OSX first. The installation process went smoothly. If you have Macbook Pros and other models that have heat issues on previous versions of OSX (Sierra), it doesnt seem to be the problem i had previously.
This question came up during my last upgrade from High Sierra to Sierra. I restarted my machine after upgrading to Sierra, booted from a High Sierra Bootable drive, and tried to install Photoshop CS6 from the app store. The installation did not complete and a black screen appears after a brief message. I can see the Photoshop icon in the Applications folder. I can even start Photoshop CS6 but I get an error message after exiting. Has anybody else had this problem? I have also noticed that there was no need to back up my Photoshop files and the Mac was not set to save changes in the Photoshop preferences. I used the Disk Utility to erase the drive and reinstall, but still no success. This is a really big problem, since the last time I installed Photoshop, this installation went smoothly.

You will need to use caution when upgrading, and remember youre already on the route to a newer OS, so dont install stuff that might break your machine in the process, especially if youre not entirely familiar with the OS.
