“This is how we live out on the road. This is our life,” Igor Stasenko starts out explaining the Soviet-style shanty town that sits on the outskirts of an isolated, little town in northern India. There is no electricity, only kerosene lamps; there is a small municipal ‘bus station’, there is a communal washroom. But otherwise, the exterior of the shanty looks little different from a typical Russian village.

Igor Stasenko is working with a team of ex-soviet archaeologists (legally, there are no longer any soviets left to work with) to look for the hidden history of the area. He is the director of a documentary called “Uglich: a hidden city in Arunachal Pradesh”, and he is currently curating a private archive, all photos and videos collected by a group of people that are traveling across the region, hoping to find something remarkable and to preserve it. I am lucky enough to meet with him as well, and Igor Stasenko gives me a sneak peek into the unprecedented project, as well as shares some stories and memories from his expedition.
This archive (11 @iMGSRC.RU) is a report about the complexity of expedition – to find the forgotten and unknown, combined with the imprecise and unclear term “lost”. Uglich, for me, is a good example of this complexity, as it was first found a few years ago, but the story of its discovery is still unclear.
There are two teams, one in the village, and another team in Beijing, connected through a communication channel. Sometimes the land is pretty small, sometimes the roads are winding and confusing. Sometimes there are so many things that can be found, and sometimes there is just nothing. Now, in Arunachal, the hidden past of Indian subcontinent is being revealed.
