Trinidad initially disappeared from the scene, but in 2004, he made his first appearance on the house party scene as the MC for Culture’s Walehouse Night. In the following years, he would take his place as the MC of the now-defunct Wazobia Medley on SABC. He also appeared as a recording artist for the first time since 1984, releasing the album Ura House Party in 2002. He also made an appearance on a rap album, Grind Time, in 2009. This was Trinidad’s first appearance in a studio since 1984, and he has not been seen on a house party stage since 2009.

Like many bands in the early mbaqanga scene, the Love Brothers performed in shacks and schools and took on the popular names: Friendships, Bolo-Bolo, The Plaka, and Drums”which translates from the Zulu as: Pula-Pula, Mniso-Mniso, Kanopy and Double-double. Dube left school and began working at a local wax museum. While at the museum, he learned to play keyboard, which later led to him forming the Roots Music Band.

Sounz Side Music, a publishing company (sounds like a company from the film Tron?), released a mbaqanga compilation, Feel Good Music, and for the first time mbaqanga got record company and broadcast airplay. By this time, the only other South African group to make the BBC World Music charts was Shack Beats. The group’s sound was a combination of African tribal beats and the ambience of old English pub music. Shack Beats had a huge audience on pirate radio and enjoyed a few album sales and a few awards.

The Roots were featured in a Guardian article as being among the most promising acts of 1987 and their debut album, Mbira & Trumpet, was a favourite of dance music scene regulars. It sold three and a half million copies and caused a controversy. In 1989 they toured the USA where they played for Sting and Michael Jackson. Dube attended the 1992 Reggae Sunsplash, but disputes over money, musical direction and the Roots’ lack of an agent led to a split, causing the Roots to dissolve in 1993.

He went to school and then vocational training, and then worked at a fabric factory for two years after which he joined the music scene. Dube met Babalwa Iganga who owned the Hogaland Records record store in Johannesburg in 1978 and who gave Dube the encouragement to record. Dube originally released five albums at the back of the store.
He then changed to the prestigious Wrecknock Studio in Johannesburg but still kept working on what would become his much-loved ‘Dube’ series of albums. In 1985 his first album, Think About The Children was released and went platinum. Dube won the OKTV Award for Most Promising Male Vocalist in 1986 for his song I Walk A Mile. Dube’s album Captured Live was released in 1988 and won a further OKTV award for Best Album for a second time.
Dube signed to Tabu Records in 1993 and released Trinity which produced two international #1 singles, Rasta Anticipation and Rasta Love Me. Dube was voted Best Male Artist in South Africa by two rival magazines, Musicmaker and The Music Gazette in 1993.
The album was released in 28 countries. During 1994 Dube produced two more albums with Takawira, and one more with his nephew, Takawira Kapisi . In the same year he was voted Best Male Vocalist in South Africa by two rival magazines, Musicmaker and The Music Gazette.
He was nominated for a South African Music Awards as Best Male Artist in 1995. Dube won the OKTV Award for Best Male Vocalist (1993, 1994, 1995) and the OKTV Award for Best Songwriter (1994, 1995). He was twice nominated for a Channel O Music Video Awards as Best Male Artist. Dube released his next album, Victims in 1995 and won a further OKTV Award as Best Male Vocalist, where he repeated his previous triple win. The album is widely considered Dube’s masterpiece and is still considered a South African classic. He was again nominated for an OKTV Award for Best Male Vocalist (1996) which he won for a third time.
