The layout of the tech panel is very similar on both products. However, the Pioneer DDJ-400 is more minimalistic and understated. While the Pioneer DDJ-400 is only an affordable option for you if youre looking for a limited feature DJ controller, the Traktor Kontrol S2 MK3 is exactly what you want if youre looking for a high-end competitive DJ controller for event work. If youre looking for a unit that will also fit in your studio, then you should definitely be looking at the DJM-2000.
In terms of performance, the Traktor S2 and the Kontrol S2 MK3 are virtually identical. Both have the same number of performance pads and the key shift function is quite easy to use. The small differences youll have to decide for yourself. The Kontrol S2 MK3 is slightly larger in size, but most likely the size difference is quite unnoticeable. Its a small price difference between these two products if you want to get an entry-level DJ controller.
In terms of functionality, the DJC.4 offers a mixer that is superior to the mixer section you will find on the Traktor Kontrol S2 MK3. As mentioned before, the DJC.4 features an analog output that lets you feed the mixer panel of any standard controller or mixer. This results in a more flexible, simple mixer, than the 32-channel digital mixer on the S2. Finally, the DJC.4 features a headphone jack, which is of course a very nice feature to have.
The Scratch and Button Edit on the DJC.4 goes further than on the Traktor S2, enabling you to edit the frequency, hold time, and/or volume levels of these controls when you wish to do so. To enable this, go to the DJC.4 Settings screen, then select ‘Tweaks’ in the ‘Stuff’ section. Click through to the ‘Advanced’ tab and you will see the buttons in the image below.
On the DJC.4, both the horizontal and vertical tilting motions are used to mix instead of Scratch mode. However, I found that, with the DJC.4, mix control was easier to maintain – and when it came time to step out of the mode, I could step to the fore of the controller and do it without having to reach across to the Traktor S2. On the plus side, the DJC.4 has a good-sized workspace area and plenty of buttons.
The DJC.4 also shares the same look as the more established Traktor controllers such as the S2. This is a good thing, as it alleviates any concerns about looking out of the era. The DJC.4 is easy to hold and easy to move, but the screen is small, which makes it a bit tricky to read.
The DJC.4s DJ or Traktor app has lots of good features. It has a more capable social side than other programs, allowing you to send ideas to each other, and share data such as room ID and other useful information across multiple users. There are also a good number of playlists on offer, with even more being added as time goes on. For those that want to create their own content with DJ tools, the DJC.4 has a dedicated ‘Mix Library’ section to manage all the tracks that you play.
As mentioned before, Xone:K1 is a very capable controller that can be easily connected to Traktor or any other DJ software – DJs can manipulate all the controls from their dj console. Xone:K1 is extremely inexpensive (only $50) and has all the features you would expect of a good quality controller. While it s smaller than the DJC.4, the Xone:K1 is still very well built and can handle the all the applications most DJs use. This is one of my favourite controllers because it feels smaller than its size would suggest.
