Visual CVS (Visual Source Control) is a software product that provides distributed version control and source code management. CVS has extensive command line and GUI interfaces, and integrates tightly with many third-party software products.

SVN is the (dubious, as of now) most popular version control system for Visual Studio.
You can checkout a project from the command line, and you can use the TortoiseSVN client to work with the repo.

For our projects, we recently have been using SVN. I think it has a few advantages over CVS, the main one being the ability to commit without quitting the working directory.
For example, we don’t want our commit messages to be truncated to 50 characters if the repository is too large. We have made a habit of leaving our commit messages on screen to give ourselves a little more room. This is easily done with SVN.
We’ve also gotten into a “Happy Path Workflow” where we save our.sln and.suo files with the file date at the start of the day, then “lock” the project by closing the solution. As long as you continue to work within the same solution, your changes will be saved when you leave the project. Otherwise, your changes will be saved to the appropriate project files.
We don’t set a working copy to anything other than the root of the repo and we don’t use working copies in our projects. This

Well, I’m pretty sure every Visual Studio project is under version control, even if they’re not using Visual SourceSafe or TFS or whatever. I don’t think Visual Studio makes much of a distinction between version control and just having a file somewhere under version control.
What it probably does do is give you the option of “uploading” your project to Visual Source Safe, and then have it track the source changes you make. But if you don’t want to use that, it’s still easy to just edit your files, and save them to whatever file system you like, as long as the repository knows how to access it.

VS is a “Version Control System”, which means that it is a centralized system that allows you to store all the source files from different projects into one. The changes you make on these files are “Versioned” and then tracked, allowing you to roll back to a previous point in time if you make a mistake. I know it sounds a little geeky, but it is actually one of the best VCS systems around.
VisualSourceSafe is only one part of the VS Version Control system. Also, as other people have already said, it won’t allow you to upload your files to a remote server, but it will allow you to check your files in, and they will be “Versioned”, in which case, your changes will be reflected in the remote server.
