At the time of the War of the Ring, the Elvenking, Aragorn, sent forth his heir, the Prince of Gondor, Faramir, to enlist a host of men to the cause of liberation from Sauron’s reign. For Faramir’s aid was to strike at the very heart of Sauron’s power, the Golden City of Minas Tirith. It was a long ride to the heart of the Third Age, but to the Prince of Gondor’s surprise it was an easy task, the heart of Sauron’s citadel was open to them. Faramir realized that once he entered Minas Tirith, he would be faced with a master of the shadows, one who had laid waste the land of Gondor, the land of his fathers, from the days of his ancestors. Against his better judgment, Faramir agreed to a pact with Sauron to gain the ring that he wore, and when Sauron moved into Gondor, the Prince of Gondor had no choice but to agree. Faramir hoped to use his skill as a bowman to bring down the greatest of Sauron’s minions, but when he met the Witch-king of Angmar the war that would defeat Sauron had begun. Faramir’s love for his land and his people made him fight for it, when he thought the end was near, the sun god Eluhi appeared and told Faramir that he had been chosen to meet his equal–the Last King of Gondor, the last of the line of the Kings. Aragorn had failed before, but Faramir was the last king of a living people. Faramir was ready to accept the challenge and set out to meet the forces of evil, for the Light and the Black were soon to face each other and the world would hear the clash of swords against swords. As the war raged in the heart of Minas Tirith, Faramir was lost in the Dark, only to be found again by the King of Gondor. In the darkness of the West the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor was captured, and only hope lay in the arms of the Prince of Gondor. But as the final battle of the war against Sauron was upon him, in the aching heat of the West, Faramir knew that his one shot at victory had come at too high a cost to himself and his people. But the journey would not end there. After the War of the Elves and the Dwarves, the War of the Ring, it was time for Faramir to take his own place in the story. He would take the Naming of Men, he would take the Undying Lands, he would take the name Elessar, Elfstone King. For the people of Gondor the end of the Third Age would be the beginning of a new and exciting time, a time of new hope, a time of the Fall of Sauron and the freedom of Middle-earth, and in Faramir, the people of Gondor would have a hero to turn to for such a moment. A hero who could remember what those first days in Middle-earth were like, a hero who could still understand the things of Gondor, a hero who was from Gondor, and who had survived the War of the Ring, and who would lead the people of Gondor to new lands, new hopes, and a time when the world was reborn.

The Evil Campaign begins with an attack on Dale. As Galadriel and Elrond lead an army to repel the attack, you must gather the help of a King of Mirkwood, who is allied with Sauron, in order to defeat Galadriel’s forces. You must then crush their last enemy stronghold, a great tower in Mirkwood, and continue destroying all remaining opposition to the Black Tower on Weathertop. Even when Sauron learns of the Mirkwood alliance, he does not take action to stop it. After Dale falls, Mirkwood falls and much of the resistance within the game is eliminated. The heroes move to the Green Mountains, where the ghosts of the Elven ancestors give Galadriel and Elrond their counsel. The heroes are then directed to go to Rivendell, the last Elven stronghold. However, Sauron is preparing his final assault by seizing all of Arnor and declaring war on the Elves of Rivendell and the Dwarves of Erebor. In the battle for the Elves, Sauron’s forces besiege Rivendell, but the players and the characters defeat the forces and save all of the Elves. The Mirkwood campaign continues with an assault on Rhovanion. Mirkwood is the last Elven-held territory and Sauron is about to take it, but the heroes destroy his forces and drive him back to Dol Guldur. From there, Sauron’s forces besiege Erebor. After many battles, the heroes defeat Sauron at the Battle of Azanulbizar, with the help of the Old King from Mirkwood. The final campaigns ends with the defeat of Sauron in Dol Guldur. The last battle of the game is against the Corsairs of Umbar, and their giant octopus-like pet monster, which you defeat, allowing the heroes to finally become the King of Men.
