i think i may have to check out some of the hollywood movies because thats where i learned most of my english. i think i learned some of the accents in the movies too! i just think that sometimes people are a little bit too eager to learn and theres too much pressure. for me it helps a lot to just have a light mood during the preparation and to really enjoy the process.

you dont have to worry about subtitles with netflix. the subs will be in english, and they will be in sync with the film. you can turn subtitles on or off on a per-movie basis by selecting it in the queue or on the details page for that movie. you can change the default language or you can always set your settings to have subs in english. you can also select which subs to load, english or french (or danish, or spanish, or dutch, or..).
the only downside to the german versions is that they are dubbed. if you really can get used to that, then perhaps you can learn the language if you ever visit germany.

i think its a great idea to have netflix or other video streaming services (not only that) with subtitles in different languages. i know that in germany you can watch movies with subs, but you cant chose the language of the subs. (its always in english)
i think that it would be better to choose the language of the subs. (for my next trip to germany (where i live) i will try to watch some german movies with subs, but i will only choose to have subs in english.)
its a bit of a problem to have movies in original audio, but with english subtitles, since you have to know the language, so you can understand whats going on. but i think that it would be better, if the language of the subs were the language of the movie. (on netflix you can choose the language of the subs, but i think its better to choose the language of the movie.)
you also can watch movies with subs, on the laptop, or smartphone. i think that it would be better to watch movies on the laptop or smartphone, than to watch movies on your tv, and then go to the couch, and watch the subtitles on the laptop or smartphone. but thats just me.

being italian, this issue is of great, great interest, and it will never gets old. in this country, dubbing will always be supported by the average viewer, so that its pretty common to hear what has become a sort of catchprase: we have the best dubbers (along with the best food, best women and so forth). this mild chauvinism has led us to be one of the worst english speaking country in europe- even if, generally speaking, france and spain beat us! (nevertheless, they can in a way afford this attitude, since their languages are more widespread than ours). as far as my girlfriends country is concerned, which is vietnam, she has explained to me that normally they have double versions of foreign films: dubbed on t.v., with subtitles at the movies. as a matter of fact, vietnamese people are not as bad at speaking english as we are, but their knowledge of this language, i daresay, its just slightly better. and yes, the if i want to read, i open a book is a long-standing position, i really dont know what to say about, maybe its just a matter of getting used to. lykke, i really like your posts, keep up the good work! and, by the way, i cant stand dubbing: give me my dreyer, my vinterberg, my bier, my early von trier and my babettes gstebud in danish, hahaha
the intouchables is a very entertaining movie, and we all know that when we are watching it, we want to hear the words and expressions said by the actors. subtitles are a great way to do this. they take away the headache of listening to the actors and have the added advantage of allowing us to follow the dialog in the movie with the characters speaking. the only problem with subtitles is that they require you to know the language, and if you are not studying it, you may not know the language very well, especially if you are in the begining stages of your studies. so, for those of you who are in the beginning stages of learning a language, subtitles are a great way to go. i wouldnt recommend them for those who have already reached a fairly advanced level.
