About the author
I am trying to summarize in a few sentences the whole history of Indian music, although I know that’s impossible.
I have to mention one remarkable fact, which I think is obvious, but nobody will ever notice. My time as a musicologist has been the most fruitful period of my life.
My own professional career started in 1970, when I was a doctoral student at the Music Department of Paris University. Since then my only ambition has been to write a book about Indian music.
If I had no other ambition I could call this book the most important work of my life, because the book is my own brainchild. As a musicologist I was only a researcher at the time, so I had no money at all. I could only do my research as a hobby, hoping that someday somebody will reward me by making it a book. At the time I had absolutely no expectations that somebody would ever think of publishing my work.
In the beginning everything went extremely well. In 1976 the French magazine L’Âge d’homme published my first book, entitled simply Guide de la musique indienne (The Guide to Indian Music).
The next year the Spanish journal To Doenda received the equivalent of a book manuscript and published it as La guia de la música hindú (The Guide of Hindu Music) in 1977. Later that year the Finnish journal Otava also received the same manuscript, named “A survey of the raga system of the Indian music”.
The whole thing happened at the height of the period of cultural revolution in Russia, so it was easy for me to get all the rights for the book from the publishing house. But my pleasant surprise
