The Unsigntool Free Download is a tiny tool that removes Windows digital certificate from a PE file and optionally replaces it with a new one.
Unsigntool actually erases the certificate from the PE file using a native tool called CAPI Cryptographic Provider Interface (CAPI). At the same time, it replaces the original certificate with a new one if the DeleteCert parameter is true. The certificate is replaced only if the new certificate is added to the same CertSrvStore as the previous certificate. If a different CertSrvStore is specified, then the certificate will be added to that store.
You may specify the cert file name as a parameter, in order for Unsigntool to use the existing cert instead of a temporary one that is generated.
Unsigntool also checks the current validity date of the certificate. If it is older than a specified date, the certificate is replaced with a new one. Unsigntool does not do any error handling and therefore is no replacement for proper certificate validation or error reporting.
Make sure to backup your certificates before calling Unsigntool, as you should know whether or not the certificate should be replaced and it is best to backup if you need to regenerate one.
The Unsigntool can be launched by double-clicking on the executable file or by issuing double-click command from command prompt. To access the menu options, use Shift+F11.
In case of a PE file with an invalid certificate, the following message may appear: ‘The signature was invalid or the certificate did not match the certificate store.’
To replace the certificate with a valid one, just select Replace Certificates….
