The PhotoVCarve software produces surface engraving by cutting a set of parallel, square grooves into the surface of the item to be engraved. PhotoVCarve uses two techniques for creating grooves in a work piece:
Side Cut uses a set of square, diagonal cuts which are positioned parallel to one another on a line perpendicular to the down cut. Fig. 1 is an example of how grooves produced by Side Cut. Using this type of engraving, it is not possible to cut parallel lines. This is the technique that produces the narrowest engraving lines. The disadvantage of using Side Cut is that it is difficult to define the exact depth within which the grooves will cut. In order to control the depth of cut, one must move the tool along the path that is part way down the image.
Back Cut is similar to Side Cut, but the cut is made diagonally across the top corner. In general, the gray lines in Figure 1 do not look like they come from a conical, downward-pointing tool. This makes Back Cut more forgiving than Side Cut in that it is easier to control the depth of cut using the bottom corner on the image to determine the cut depth. However, the cut will still follow a path entirely parallel to the edge of the Picture.
In order to define grooves PhotoVCarve uses a set of lines anywhere from 1/6 to 1/2” wide, and either 1/32” or 1/64” between each groove. The lines extend through the image from the upper left hand corner back to the lower right hand corner. After defining the shape, the grooves are cut using a circular tool. Moving the tool moves the circular, cutting tool across the image.
