the product had a more erratic start, in which it initially failed to detect all the samples in the test set, and was only able to do so on a second scan. only after a 50-minute interval was it able to detect 17 of the 20 samples and terminate instantly (the other three stayed on the task bar). since our requirements were unusually mild, a lot of the system resources were used in the scans, leading to high average per-file cpu usage, average %ram usage, and average time to completion (in which we had to wait for the tests to finish). load times were also notable, with the first scan on a fresh install taking around 20 seconds to open and scan, and the second (in the same test run) taking only five seconds, but then rising to around 20 minutes. the controls were also very tough to use: we had to disable usb and cd-rom drives before getting to anything, with the only way to get to the products controls being by a menu of alphabetical entries.
the latest build managed to get through the test set in well under an hour. the detection rate was good, but much lower than the others, with only 10 of the samples found, and scanning being completed faster than any other tests, averaging only a short 10 seconds to terminate.
it’s also good to be reminded that even such low-end pcs as our medium spec linux vms don’t need to be particularly powerful, in order to achieve a reasonably decent level of performance without intervention, and without throwing up their hands at the task. a fine example of this is the guest windows 8 vm running spamfighter, which reached a peak cpu load of 4.4ghz, and gpu load of 11.2% while still running a fully-loaded email client.
the detection rates of the system are reasonably good, although the detection scores of both the rap and aus sets are less impressive than the advanced edition. the two sets are mainly different in that the aus includes a number of fairly basic scanner rules, including access to the exchange web mail interface and scheduled scans, all of which are fairly basic or inactive by default.
the interface is attractive and simply laid out, with minimal clutter, and provides a decent level of configuration in a pleasantly accessible style. the only things missing were a setting to simply block or record detections without any automatic action, and the lack of an option to save log data to a file leaving us wrangling an ugly and ungainly database format into shape to retrieve results. occasionally scans seemed to stop at random, and the awkward log format made it difficult to see how far they had gone, or even if any results had been saved. we also saw some scans claiming to have completed but clearly not having covered the full area requested. in the end, however, we managed to pull together what looked to be a complete set of results.
the current mainline product came in as a fairly large 265mb package, with all updates included. the set-up process was considerably longer and more involved than most. a quick scan early on took close to five minutes, and a large number of steps followed, including options to remove other solutions already present on the system, to disable the windows defender system, and to share updates with other bitdefender users (presumably some kind of torrent-style data-pooling system). after what seemed to be the last of many steps, listing the included features as anti-virus and identity protection, a ten-second pause was followed by another option: whether or not to contribute anonymous data to a feedback system. there was then another ten seconds of silence, then the offer of a demo video fortunately we didnt have flash player installed on the test systems, so we could finally get testing under way.
