But now researchers at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., are tapping the code of communication between parent and child to build what will be the most advanced seabird radar system on the North American continent. And if Seabird has its way the system will not only help Oregon’s endangered sheepshead seabirds nest successfully, but also give a little insight into seabirds’ parental natures, says the project’s leader, Owen Lovejoy, a Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., biologist with a lifelong fascination with seabirds. Lovejoy’s interest in their social lives dates back to his undergraduate biology studies at the University of Arizona, where his master’s thesis adviser, Mark Jacobsen, an avian biologist, showed him the brain structure of seabirds that enable them to remain close to their offspring.
