When we injected mice with the PU foams, we found higher levels of a particular substance in their urine. This substance has been linked to tumour formation in human urine – and even to kidney cancer.
We know that the substance is linked to the chemicals used in the manufacture of PU foams. And yet, we still don’t know the long-term effects of these foams, which can be found in everything from stuffed toys to cladding to insulation in houses.
Our results show that PU foams could be linked to cancer. But that’s just the start.
PU foams also absorb oil from food and have a nasty effect on the body. We found that mice exposed to the PU foam absorbed oil and that had resulted in the PU foam covering mouse brains and their ability to walk and move around.
The most worrying aspect of our study is that the chemicals in the foam triggered the formation of cancerous cells in mice. This means they could cause cancer in humans and could have long-term consequences.
We know synthetic polymers aren’t good for the environment. But how bad are they for the body?
