Earlier this year, a group of middle-school students in North Carolina gathered in a town park to create a patriotic project with art supplies. And as the original design was being created, in walked cops in full police attire to tell the students the assignment was too controversial.
“The group were working on making a design with the Confederate flag and some type of Star of David,” Luke Bracey, a teacher at the school told HuffPost. “In walked some police who told us that it was offensive to the Jewish community and we could not use the flag.”
The students, upset about the warning, were told that they could make their artwork, but that it would be “prohibited” from having any “display of any type” due to it being offensive.
“They had us remove our drawings and told us we could make a design on a piece of paper but no displays were permitted,” Bracey continued. “Our school district claimed that the flag does not depict the Confederacy, which I find to be ludicrous.”
Bracey, along with other teachers at the school, are now planning a march through town to protest the “violation” of students’ rights.
The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina is also involved in the case. “We’re saying that it’s a First Amendment issue, that students have a right to peaceably assemble and create their own signs,” Bracey said.
“But it’s also important to understand that the confederate flag is a symbol for white supremacy.”
