The first standalone version of AutoCAD was released in January 1983, with a second edition in 1984. Autodesk Inc. introduced AutoCAD versions 2, 3, and 4 in the mid-1980s, with versions 5 and 6 following in the mid-1990s. Autodesk Inc. discontinued the AutoCAD product line with version 7 in 2001, and rebranded the product line to AutoCAD. The company continued to sell standalone editions of AutoCAD, and add-ons and subscriptions to the license.

AutoCAD 2018 is the newest major version of AutoCAD, released in December 2017.
