The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that 1 in 5 babies in the U.S. do not receive adequate nutrition. Additionally, more than half of public school children (and four-in-ten of their families) struggle with daily hunger. In Michigan alone, over 700,000 children are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, a third of which are at risk of becoming food insecure.
Healthy eating is far more complex than measuring sugars and fats. In fact, nutrition experts recommend that all foods be included in the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) at all meals and all times of the day. HEI measures how much food a diet includes that is best for both your physical and mental health.
But what about the air we breathe? Today, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are the primary air pollutants of concern in our nation. NOx produces particulates, ozone and ground-level ozone, and SO2 is a precursor to fine particulate matter.

With the continued rise in obesity and diet-related chronic diseases, this new multimillion dollar Fund is one of the largest ever granted by our Foundation. All of the funds are focused on nutrition counseling, the skill that most informs people’s food choices and has the largest impact on their wellbeing. Past grants have supported studies, education and training of nutritionists, as well as tools to help dietitians better connect with their clients.
Studies show that nutrition counseling helps prevent obesity, improve health, and positively impact mental health and well-being. Dietitians consistently find that their clients are receptive to nutrition counseling and find it to be one of their most powerful tools in helping their clients to make healthier food decisions and achieve a healthier lifestyle.
