Football career

Aston Villa
Born in Walsall, West Midlands, Leland was signed by Aston Villa as a teenager, and went on to represent England at schoolboy and under-21 level.

He made his Football League debut against Wigan Athletic on 20 September 1990, before making further appearances against Derby County, Arsenal, Walsall and Rochdale. He was transferred to Derby County in March 1992, for a fee of £150,000, but never made an appearance for the club.

Derby County
He was loaned to Derby’s divisional rivals, Aston Villa, for a month in the second half of the 1991–92 season, and later made the move permanent for £75,000. After three years at Villa Park, Leland joined former manager Graham Taylor for a short spell at Derby County in October 1994. Leland made his debut against Portsmouth on 15 October, and his only goal for the club came when he scored a last-minute equaliser against Bury in the 1996 Football League Trophy final.

He was signed for Derby by Danny Bergara, Taylor’s successor at Pride Park, for £300,000 in November 1996. Leland broke his leg just weeks after his arrival, and after an unsuccessful loan spell at Carlisle United, he was back at Derby for the 1997–98 season. He played in Derby’s 1998 Football League Trophy Final defeat to Luton Town.

He was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday for the 1999–2000 season. He made 15 league appearances for the Owls, scoring just once, before returning to Derby. He played 14 times in the 2000–01 season, then left to join Halifax Town on
