Show lessFactors contributing to the stability of global oceanic ecosystems are poorly understood. The biogeochemistry and ecosystem structure of the open ocean is strongly influenced by its large extent, temporal and spatial heterogeneity, and the complexities of biological interactions and feedbacks. Unlike the well-studied coastal and shelf ecosystems, the open ocean has been considered little more than a passive vector for coastal runoff and transport of oceanic and shelf derived material. Although efforts to understand these systems have intensified in recent years, most focus on their role as sources of material in terrestrial systems, rather than their role in the regulation of global oceanic biogeochemistry. Here, we review the major current knowledge of how the open ocean affects biogeochemical cycles, and offer an overview of the open ocean as an ecosystem. We also present a conceptual framework for the conceptualization and evaluation of open ocean ecosystem models, and discuss areas that should be focused upon in the future.
